How to scan a QR code using a laptop

Use a webcam for a printed code, or the image reader for a code already visible on your screen.

Allow the camera

Choose Start camera, then allow access in the browser prompt. Camera access needs HTTPS or localhost. If access fails, close video call apps and check system camera permissions.

Focus and light

Hold the code steady with all corners visible. Move it farther from a fixed focus webcam if it looks blurry. Reduce reflections on glossy paper and avoid pointing a bright lamp directly at it.

Use an image instead

For a code in a document or website, take a screenshot and paste it into the scanner. This avoids trying to scan your own display with the built in webcam.

Try the scanner, generator or QR checker. Your images and QR payloads are processed locally.

Install Valid QR Scan

In your browser menu, choose “Install app” or “Add to Home Screen”. On iPhone or iPad, open Share, then Add to Home Screen. In Safari on Mac, use File, then Add to Dock.

Visit once online and wait for “Offline tools ready”. Scanning and generation can then work without a connection. Opening a web destination still needs internet.
